From RFI 13 Aug 98

Macworld's iMac Test Units:

Last night ZDTV reported, and had video, of Mac Publishing staffers carting out the first iMacs for benchmark testing so they will have them finished by the 15 Aug 98 iMac launch. ZDTV also had footage of Macworld's Andy Gore talking about the tests to be done Wednesday night so they'll have all of the results ready. So much for cloak and dagger secrecy!

Listen folks. By the time you read this item those tests should be close to completion if not completion. The results should be finalized by Thursday. And yes, Macworld will have scored yet another scoop when it launches its benchmark results on: iMacworld.com, Macworld and MacWEEK.

Bottom Line?:

For better or worse thank the fact that an alert, yet bored, RFI staffer was watching ZDTV and alerted us to the fact that the item was running on ZDTV news. RFI says "alert" because they were awake. We also say "bored" because the majority of the content is geared towards things that aren't of interest to those in the financial community. We mean, how interesting is it for market types to watch pieces on "Cyber Dating Services?" But, we digress.

Finally. Give credit where credit is due. Macworld and ZDTV obtained a "coup" and Apple continues to generate "buzz" over the iMac with their marketing moves. For once, RFI has to state that the critics of Apple's "marketing" have to be felled into silence. We were able to give you a warning that the "Official Benchmarks" will soon be ofrthcoming as well as where they will first be published. Now, all "they" will have to do is suffer the "whining" from those who weren't given "fair access." Mark our words, it will come.

More iMacworld.com:

RFI was wondering how things were going with iMacworld.com in its first week after we "outed" it prematurely. So, we asked some people: "How're things going?" (Smart, we know). Apparently things are going well. The site is reportedly "getting lots of traffic," but those with whom we talked did not have access to the numbers. But considering the "perspective" of what their sites get in the way of traffic we suspect "lots" is a level that most established Internet sites would die for. Good for them.

Apparently the: iMac frenzy, News.com stories, etc., all appear to be working their magic. And, it only bolster's RFI's analysis of iMacworld.com, etc.

Bottom Line?:

Could the anticipated success of the iMac and Apple's "Consumer Strategy," etc. eventually result in "space" in ZDTV's lineup? Possible, but that's sheer speculation. At the very least there will be more coverage on ZDTV's existing lineup. We shall see what we shall see.

Adddendum: The above item was written before we were made aware of the ZDTV iMac Test Unit story. So, it does seem to be a self-fulfilling prophesy, but it wasn't. And, during that same report RFI also learned that ZDTV will be having special coverage of the iMac launch on Saturday, check your local listings or the ZDTV site. Amazing. Working.....
